what is the biomedical model?

focuses solely on understanding, treating and intervening with biological abnormalities. suggests any other process is not relevant in health.

what are some criticisms of the biomedical model?

positives - huge advances in modern medicine driven by biological focus, such as developing vaccines.
negatives - reductionist and too simple, neglects social factors, can be ill with no medical explanation, deaths reduce over time

what is the biopsychosocial model?

it was originally proposed by Engel, 1977
it takes into account how biological, psychological and social factors can all effect wellness.

what are some criticisms of the biopsychosocial model?

positives - it improves on the oversimplified version, and leads to a more comprehensive understanding.
negatives - a broad model, not a specific theory. the biomedical model still dominates medicine. it is complex to use in clinical situations.

what is anti-biotic resistance?

anti-biotics help treat and prevent infection. however, can be overused and make people immune to them. ways to help include: only prescribing when needed, reduce infection in the first place, support alternatives for anti-biotics.

what is the anti-vaccine issue?

there has been an increase in anti-vax movement, due to thinking autism is caused by it in early 2000's. ways to help: researching and understanding concerns and providing credible and persuasive resources.

what is the dementia issue?

dementia is increasing as the population is considerably old. ways to help: helping caregivers, potentially preventing cognitive decline, and helping them manage and adapt to change.

what are the issues with non-communicable diseases?

diabetes, cancer and heart disease are responsible for around 70% of all population deaths. ways to help: behaviour change and lifestyle interventions, managing long term conditions, reducing disability.

the nhs is constantly facing funding cuts and understaffing. ways to help include: helping healthcare professionals cope so they can deal with stress and reducing the cost of managing health conditions.
