Waves

?
What are sound waves caused by?
Vibrating objects.
1 of 14
Vibrations are passed through the surrounding medium due to what?
A series of compressions and rarefactions.
2 of 14
What type of wave is sound?
Longitudinal Waves.
3 of 14
In which states does sound travel through the fastest? The fastest first and the slowest last.
Solids, liquids, then gases.
4 of 14
How does sound travel through a solid?
The sound caused the particles in the solid to vibrate. These particles hit the next particles in the line and so on- Passing the sound wave through the objects as a series of vibrations.
5 of 14
Why can't sound travel in space?
This is because its a vacuum. This means there are no particles to vibrate.
6 of 14
How does the ear work?
The sound waves cause your eardrum to vibrate. These vibrations are passed onto tiny bones called ossicles, through the semicircular canals and to the cochlea. They turn the vibrations into electrical signals which get sent to your brain.
7 of 14
Compare the frequency range that humans, bats, dolphins and elephants can hear.
Human = 20Hz - 20kHz Bats = 3kHz - 120kHz Dolphin = 1kHz - 130kHz Elephant = 12Hz - 12kHz
8 of 14
Can sound waves Reflect or refract?
Yes, it can do both. Sound waves will be reflected by hard flat surfaces e.g. Echos. They will refract as they enter different media. As they enter denser material they speed up.
9 of 14
What is a use of sound waves?
Ultrasound.
10 of 14
What frequency do ultrasounds need to be above?
20,000Hz or 20kHz.
11 of 14
What happens to a wave when it passes to another medium?
Partial reflection, when some of the wave is reflected off the boundary between the two media, and some is transmitted (and refracted).
12 of 14
How do ultrasounds use partial reflection?
When you point a pulse of ultrasound at an object, wherever there are boundaries some of the ultrasound gets reflected back. The time it takes for the reflections to reach a detector can be used to measure how far away the boundary is.
13 of 14
What can ultrasound be used for?
Medical - Checking a pre-natal baby, measure the speed of blood in a vein or artery. Industry - Finding cracks in metal objects such as in aircraft Also by boats to find out the depth of the water or to locate objects in the water.
