What is the meaning of Drainage basin?
It is the area drained by a river and it's tributaries.
1 of 23
What is the meaning of source?
It is where the river begins.
2 of 23
What is the meaning of mouth?
It is where the river ends.
3 of 23
What is the meaning of watershed?
It is the boundary of the drainage basin and is usually a ridge of high land.
4 of 23
What is the meaning of confluence?
The point where tributaries may join the main river.
5 of 23
What is the meaning of hydraulic action?
It is the sheer force of the water hitting the bed and the banks of the river. This is most effective when the water is moving fast and there is a lot of it.
6 of 23
What is the meaning of abbrasion/ corrasion?
When small particles of rock carried by the river rubs against the banks of the river, causing some of the material to break off.
7 of 23
What is the meaning of attrition?
When rocks and material carried by the river grind into each other and wear down.
8 of 23
What is the meaning of solution/corrosion?
It is when rocks in the river are dissolved by acid.
9 of 23
What is the meaning of vertical erosion?
Vertical erosion is when water erodes downwards e.g cliffs.
10 of 23
What is the meaning of lateral erosion
Lateral erosion is when water erodes sideways e.g banks of rivers
11 of 23
What is the meaning of traction?
It is the method used for moving the largest material. This is too heavy to lose contact with the bed, so material such as boulders roll along.
12 of 23
What is the meaning of saltation?
Moves the small stones and grains of sand by bouncing them along the bed in a leap-frog movement.
13 of 23
What is the meaning of suspension?
It is the means of carrying very fine material within the water, so that it floats in the river and is moved as it flows.
14 of 23
What is the meaning of solution?
It is when the minerals are dissolved in water.
15 of 23
What is the meaning of deposition?
It is the laying down of material when the river does not have the energy to transport this material any further.
16 of 23
What is the meaning of discharge?
It is the amount of water passing a point on the river bank in a certain amount of time.
17 of 23
What is the meaning of cross section?
It is a diagram of a river from bank to bank.
18 of 23
What is the meaning of long profile?
It is the diagram of a river from its source to its mouth.
19 of 23
What is a meander?
A bend in a river.
20 of 23
What is a river cliff?
A small cliff formed on the outside of a meander bend due to eorsion in this high energy zone.
21 of 23
What is the slip-off slope?
A small beach found on the inside of a meander bend where deposition has occurred in low energy zone.
22 of 23
What is an ox-bow lake?
A lake formed when the continued narrowing of a meander neck results in the eventual cut through the neck as two outer bends join. This result in the straightening of the river channel and the old meander bend becomes cut off forming an ox-bow lake.
