What is a tissue?

A tissue consists of many of the same type of cell, classified according to structure,location, size, shape and function.

What are the four main types of tissue?

Epithelial, Connective, Muscle and Nervous.

What are the functions of connective tissue?

1. To provide structural support, such as for bones and cartilage in the skeletal system, and areolar tissue which bonds tissues like skin and muscle. 2. To protect - the skull protects the brain, and the ribs protect the heart and lungs.

3. To transport substances in the blood. 4. To insulate (adipose tissue contains fatty deposits to help to prevent heat loss).

Cartilage, Adipose, Areolar, Bone and Blood

What is epithelial tissue?

They cover the body and line cavities, hollow organs and tubes. They are also found in glands of the endocrine system, where hormones are made that regulate different bodily functions, such as growth, reproduction and sleep.

What are the functions of epithelial tissue?

1. Protect underlying structures, for example skin protects all internal tissues and organs. 2. Secrete, for example goblet cells in the lining of the digestive system secrete enzymes and mucus. 3. Absorb, e.g lining of lungs absorb oxygen from air.

What are the four types of simple epithelial tissue?

1. Simple cuboidal. 2. Simple squamous. 3. Simple columnar. 4. Ciliated.

Whatare the two different types of compund epithelium?

1. Simple compund epithelium consists of several layers of cells, outer layer may be worn away. 2. Keratinised compound epithelium like our skin, the outer layers of cells are dead, flattened and filled with protein called keratin. Makes waterproof.

What are the three main types of muscle tissue?

1. Striated (skeletal or voluntary) tissue is under conscious control, enabling us to move our bones. . Non-striated (smooth or involuntary) tissue is concerned with many internal body processes and functions like peristalsis in the digestive system.

3. Cardiac tissue is found only in the heart wall. It is not under conscious control and never tires.

What are characteristics of muscle tissue?

1. Contractability - ability to shorten and thicken. 2. Irritability - ability to respond to stimuli created by nerve impulses. 3. Extensibility - abilit to stretch. 4. Elasticity - ability to return to its original shape following contraction.

What are the two types of nervous tissue?

Neurones and neuroglia

What is a neurone?

A specialised nerve cell that receives stimuli, converts to a nerve impulse, transmits this to other neurones, muscles and glands. Occur as single cells and in groups in certain areas like spinal cord. Consists of cell body, axon and many dendrites.

What are neuroglia?

These support and protect the neurones. They are smaller and more numerous than neurones, forming over 50% of brain tissue.
