The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity - EQ1 Lesson 1

?
On a global scale, we view the hyrological cylcle as a 'closed system'. What is meant by 'closed system'?
This means that water is not added or removed from the hydrological cycle.
1 of 16
What are the three main movements of water around the hydrological cycle?
Stores, Fluxes and Processes.
2 of 16
What is meant by 'stores' of water?
These are stocks of water (places where water is held) such as the oceands (in liquid form) and icebergs (in solid form).
3 of 16
What is meant by 'fluxes' of water?
This is the measurement of the rate of water flow between stores.
4 of 16
What is meant by 'processes' of water?
These are the physical facotrs which drive fluxes of water between stores.
5 of 16
What forms of energy is the hydrological cycle driven by?
Solar and gravitational potential energy.
6 of 16
How did the last Ice Age alter the water cycle?
More water was held in the cryosphere as ice and snow.
7 of 16
How is climate change and global warming impacting on the cryosphere?
It is causing rising global temperatures, meaning snow and ice is melting. In Greenland and Antartica there are major losses of ice.
8 of 16
Humans have built water storage reservoirs in order to improve water security. Can you name an example?
The Three Gorges Dam.
9 of 16
What is meant by 'residence time'?
This is the average time a water molecule spends in a store.
10 of 16
What does residence time impact on within the water cycle?
The turnover period.
11 of 16
What is the key term used to describe acient ground water found in the Sahara Desert?
Fossil Water.
12 of 16
Why do very accessible stores of water such as soil moisture, have very short residence times?
Because they’re easily accessible, easily lost by evaporation, transpiration and transportation via ground water flow.
13 of 16
True or False, Residence time and pollution have a strong relationship.
True.
14 of 16
Explain the differences between blue water and green water.
[1] Blue water is a visible part of the hydrological cycle.
15 of 16
Explain why a large proportion of the worlds fresh water is not available for human use.
[1] only 1% of fresh water is accessible to humans.
