promoted to the Politburo in 1952, he was openly critical of Khrushchev's policies, and was central to the plot to remove him. became leader of the USSR in 1964. he encouraged the creation of his own cult of personality.

joined the party in 1930 and held various international posts under Khrushchev. he was a supporter of economic reform in the 1960s, but was ecliped by Brezhnev.

Andropov and Chernenko
both men briefly led the USSR following Brezhnev's death. both died before the reforms fully implemented. not prepared to make any fundamental changes to the USSR
