Germany's government collapsed after WW1. As a result, German Politicians, led by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) created a new constitution known as Weimar

It was democratic. The new government would be based on regular elections and the constitution guaranteed legal protection for individual rights.

Why was the new constitution necessary?
The immediate cause of the creation of the new constitution was their defeat in the war. Military defeated caused political, economic and cultural crisis which destroyed the government. The new democracy to lessen the impact of crisis.

After four yrs of war the German government accepting defeat was inevitable. To prevent more military crisis German leaders appealed to the US president to help negotiate an end to the war and a fair peace deal.

To strengthen negotiation points a revolutionary from above was instigated and a new government was created. This new government was an attempt to persuade the USA , Britain and France that Germany was becoming democratic

Became the new chancellor to head the new government.

German leaders hoped that this step towards democracy would encourage the USA, Britain and France to treat Germany with sympathy rather than using their victory to impose a harsh peace treaty.

Ending the war
The constitutional change was advantageous from the POV of senior members of the army. The change in governmnet was welcomed by senior members of the army as they did not want to be blamed for ending the war and admitting defeat.

Revolution from below
Military defeat was accompanied by economic collapse. Ppl were dying from hunger and hypothermia, prices for common items had increased (Approximately 293,000 died in 1918)

Mutiny
Caused by the shock of defeat and the economic crisis. It started with the German fleet in the North German port of Kiel and spread. Abdication of the Kaiser was demanded, he was blamed for the start of the war and wasn't trusted to negotiate peace

Prince Max announced the Kaiser would abdicate, this ended the German monarchy causing a ore radical change that the revolutionary from above. The leader of the SPD created a provisional coalition gov, until a National Constitute Assembly election
