What is Sociology?
the relationship between sport and society. it considers how inequalities in sport can be overcome for groups in society.

a group of people involved in persistent interpersonal relationships
(e.g. sharing location, culture, political party)

What is Socialisation?
a lifelong process where members of a society learn its norms, values, ideas, practices and roles in order to take place in that society

What is Primary Socialisation?
the first introduction to norms and values, which takes place in early childhood and is taught by parents/carers

What is Secondary Socialisation?
teachers and peers changing a person's values and ideas throughout school years continuing into adulthood

What is Gender Socialisation?
learning the behaviours and attitudes historically considered appropriate for a given sex - taught by the media, family, school etc

What are Social Processes?
involves interactions between individuals and groups which occur over and over again
e.g. integration, cooperation

What is Social Control?
the process of attempting to control people's thoughts, appearance, feelings and behaviours

e.g. athletes expected to wear particular clothing and behave a certain way when competing

an alteration in the social order of a society where there's a significant change in social behaviours and cultural values over time; has long term effects

includes sport becoming more accessible for minority groups (i.e. by campaigns like 'This Girl Can

What are Social Issues?
a problem or conflict which affect a considerable number of people in society

e.g. gender wage gap, opportunities unevenly spread, inequalities caused by money

What is Social Stratification?
a way of dividing up members of society based on characteristics such as wealth - those at the top tend to have greater wealth + opportunities
(e.g. private schools have better facilities)

How does Social Class affect participation in Sport?
lower class children may have to do domestic roles, so will not have the time to play sport. economic inequalities will mean parents cannot afford to fund their child's sports memberships

What is Social Action theory?
socialisation with an interactionist approach. involves an individual carrying out an action with meaning (e.g. start womens rugby team to oppose stereotypes). may involve creativity to oppose norms and influence others. new interactions create organisati

What are Rational Actions?
rational actions are taken if a performer believes that the ends justify the means.

What are Instrumental Actions?
actions taken after evaluating the impact of the goal.
