Progressive overload
To improve the training needs to be hard enough to cause the body to adapt

Specificity
The training needs to be specific to the sports performer's sport or fitness goals

Individual needs
The training needs to be designed for the individual taking into account factors such as fitness level

Adaptability
The body's reaction to workloads where it increases it's ability to cope with those loads

Rest and recovery
The body needs time to repair and damage the exercise has caused

Variety
The exercises need to change in order to stop the performer becoming bored

Reversibility
If training is stopped or it is not hard enough to cause adaption, the training effects are reversed
