Electorate
All those entitled to vote.Note that in 2001, 59% of the UK electorate voted.

Constitunecy
A geographical area that has the right gto send one MP to Parliament.

Strong/Stable Government
A strong government is one which has a sufficiently large majority to get its manifesto promises passed into law. A stable goverment is one with a guranteed majority which is unlikely to be overthrown.

Coaltition Government
A governemnt made up of 2 or more parties, neither of which has a majority in Parliament. It is usual for the larger party to provide the prime minister/cheif executive but for the smaller party or parties to have some key posts in the administration

Tactical Voting
The pratice whereby a voter does not vote for his or her first preference party but votes for another party in order to keep out a third party that the voter dislikes.

Majoritarian Systems
Electoral systems which require the winning candidate, at either local or national level, to receive more than 50% of the total vote.

Proportional Representation
A system of voting which seeks to ensure that there is a direct mathematical relationship between the number of votes cast and the number of seats gained in an election
