The Catholics view on the authority of the bible
They believe that through the gift of the Holy Spirit, God inspired the people who wrote the books. However the church has more authority over the bible and has the power to interpret and define its words.

Some Christians will say that every word in the Bible is absolutely true eg.Jesus really did walk on water, many literalist refuse to believe in scientific theories like evolution, they believe the bible has verbal inerrancy and that there's no error

They believe the bible rocords experiences of people seeking after God in a different time and cultural setting but it can be applied to modern life. Also spiritual truths can be learnt from the bible and its stories can be helpful to understand God.

Many believe that the Bible was inspired by God and not dictated, except human error in bible and agree some elements are outdated such as exceptance of slavery. Think of it as useful historical text.
