A compound that contains enough of the metal to make it worthwhile extracting. A finite resource.

Where are metal ores found?
They're found naturally in the Earth's crust.
2 of 7
What is oxidation?
The formation of metal ore. Gain of oxygen to an element.
3 of 7
What is reduction?
The extraction of metal. Loss of oxygen.
4 of 7
Name two ways reduction can take place.
Heating with carbon or electrolysis.

Why can not all metal ores be extracted by the heating of carbon?
Because carbon can only extract metal ores if they are less reactive than carbon itself. Elements more reactive form very stable ores and have to be reduced by electrolysis.
