Why did religion limit the progress of medicine in the Prehistoric Period?
-belief in "spirit world", bad spirits cause disease so didn't look for natural explanation, cures restricted to supernatural eg trephining,charms, medicine man spells and chants etc.

-no settled government, nomadic lifestyle, planning and funding not available

- hunter/gatherer lifestyle, subsistence economy only (only searching for basic needs eg food water shelter etc)

- charms, quartz crystal to draw out and capture evil spirits, pointing stick (point at enemies to capture and hide soul, steal others pointing bone, hide make them ill), bury hair, nail and excrement to stop evil spirits using it, placebo effect

-broken bones were covered in mud dried then covered in sticks to hold in place, teetree used to treat cuts, plants and herbs

-cave drawings/structures, tools/weapons, artifacts,animal bones, special projects (stone henge) require large numbers of people so ideas shared: meet when lots of food eg late summer/autumn

-study bones to see what diseases and health problems they had, skulls healed over hole so people survived trephining, osteoarthritis from carry heavy loads

Problems with Archaeopathology for learning about prehistoric medicine?
Not whole skeletons as bones separated and taken for rituals, couldn't tell if died of things like a heart attack, many bones decayed too much to be useful

How do we learn about prehistoric medicine from studying aboriginal tribes today?
-similar attitudes and actions towards cause and cures of medicine, similar style of life, spiritual medicine-evil spirits, rituals etc.

-before written record, ended at different times for different societies, some societies today are prehistoric, in england the romans introduced writing in 43AD
