Movement of a body in a straight or curved line, where all parts move the same distance, in the same direction over the same time.
1 of 11
Give a practical example of linear motion
Skeleton - same distance, same direction at the same time.
Water-Skiing - only if the boat was at a constant speed and if it was on a calm body of water.
2 of 11
How does linear motion relate to Newton's first law of motion?
An uninterrupted body will continue to travel in linear motion indefinitely. In a sporting context this is rarely the case due to the forces acting on a body e.g. air resistance.
3 of 11
Define 'distance' and give the units it is measured in.
Total length of a path covered from the start to the finish.
Units - metres (m)
4 of 11
Define 'displacement' and give the units it is measured in.
The shortest straight-line route from start to finish positions.
Units - metres (m)
5 of 11
Define 'speed'.
The rate of change in distance.
6 of 11
What equation is used to work out speed?
Give the units it is measured in.
Speed = distance / time taken
Units - m/s
7 of 11
Define 'velocity'.
The rate of change in displacement.
8 of 11
What equation is used to work out velocity?
Give the units it is measured in.
Velocity = displacement / time taken
Units - m/s
9 of 11
'Define 'acceleration/deceleration'.
Acceleration - the rate of change in velocity.
Deceleration - when the rate of change in velocity is negative or there is a decrease in velocity over time.
10 of 11
What equation is used to work out acceleration/deceleration?
Give the units it is measured in.
Acceleration/Deceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) / time taken
Units - m/s/s
