Lay Magistrates
Lay Magistrates are people who are not legally qualified, in the decision-making process in our courts. There are about 29,000 lay magistrates sitting as part-time judges in the Magistrates Court; another name for lay magistrates is Justices of the Peace. They sit to hear cases as a bench of two or three magistrates.
