Key biology vocab

?
What is aerobic respiration
This is respiration using oxygen
1 of 11
What is anaerobic respiration?
This is respiration without using oxygen
2 of 11
Where does respiration take place?
In the mitochondria of the cells.
3 of 11
Why do our cells respire?
During respiration, energy is released and the body requires energy.
4 of 11
Why does our body need energy?
Energy is released in the body for: Growth and repair, movement, maintaining a steady body temperature and for active transport of materials across boundaries.
5 of 11
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen ---> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
6 of 11
What is protein synthesis?
The formation of proteins from amino acids.
7 of 11
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose ---> lactic acid + a small amount of energy
8 of 11
When does anaerobic respiration occur?
This occurs when muscles do not have enough oxygen for aerobic respiration as a result of strenuous exercise.
9 of 11
What is oxygen debt?
Lactic acid is broken down by oxygen. Therefore, when you stop exercising and begin working aerobically again, your body is in oxygen debt. This means you breathe more heavily to gain more oxygen.
10 of 11
What is the equation for lactic acid?
lactic acid + oxygen ---> carbon dioxide + water
