Asclepius was the Greek god of medicine. The greeks believed he could cure most illnesses.Cures by Asclepius took place at the Asclepion Temple. Cures involved natural methods like bathing,exercising and sleep as well as using natural remedies.

The greeks were very interested in nature and how it affected them. They developed a theory based on what they saw around them everyday,that the world was made up of four elements and that they linked to the four seasons.

Hippocrates developed his theory of the four humours. He thought that everybody was made up of four humours which had to be balanced if a person was to be healthy.The four humours were blood,phlegm,black bile and yellow bile and black bile.

Hippocrates wrote down his methods in books.These became known as the Hippocratic Collection. He emphasised that doctors should use clinical observation to watch and record symptoms and cures.

Clinical Observation and treatment involves trust between the doctor and patient. Hippocrates and his followers swore a Hippocratic Oath in which they promised to do their patient no harm.
