What were the Newcastle Propositions and when were they?
1646- a settlement drawn up by parliament and issued to Charles. Involved 20 yrs of parliamentary control of the militia, 3 yrs of presbytarianism, triennial act & 58 royalists not pardoned. Charles didn't accept.

What were the Heads of Proposals and when were they?
1647- settlement drawn up by the army, first sign of their politicisation. Regular biennial parliaments, reform of parliamentary representation, restore the national church, parliament control militia & the Act of Oblivion- By Ireton and Lambert.

What was the Engagement and when was it?
1647- Charles signed engagement with the Scots, they would invade Eng and restore him on the throne if he agreed to 3yrs of presbytarianism (Charles agreed)- this was instead of the Heads of Proposals.

What was the Windsor Prayer Meeting and when was it?
1648- the army met to pray before facing their enemies (the royalists). Charles was referred to as 'that man of blood' as they were about to go to the 2nd civil war. Included Ireton, Lambert and Cromwell

Why was there a Second Civil War and when was it?
1647 to 48- regarded a settlement with Charles as impossible, included Battle of Preston and Colchester. Royalists lost again- included Charles, Scots and the parliamentary army.

What was the Newport Treaty and when was it?
1648- last attempt at a settlement, however it failed and led the army to Pride's purge. Included Charles and parliament (mostly the parliamentary presbytarians)

What was the Remonstrance of the Army and when was it?
1648- aka. Ireton's Remonstrance, called for Charles to be put on trial and if not they would purge parliament of all those willing to negotiate a settlement with Charles (Pride's Purge) and then put Charles on trial.

What was Pride's Purge and when was it?
1648- after parliament failed to put Charles on trial despite the Remonstrance, the army marched into parliament and purged it of all those willing to negotiate with Charles. This left the Rump parliament.

Why was Charles executed?
1649- he was referred to as 'that man of blood', lost 2 wars and therefore seen as God's judgement for parliament to win, fears of him starting another civil war with catholic troops in Ireland & Charles refused to accept the legitimacy of the court.
