Phase I Clinical Trial
The compound is given to healthy volunteers to see if it is absorbed, distibuted, metabolised and excreted normally. Volunteers are each given different doses to see what the most effective dose is.

Phase II Clinical Trial
Small groups of volunteer patients are given the compound to test the effectiveness. If the results are good, it will move onto Phase III.

Phase III Clinical Trial
Double-blind randomised trials are set up; this is where neither the doctor nor the patient know if the drug they are given is a placebo or not. This minimises the placebo effect to improve validity. The compound can now be licenced as a drug.

After Licencing
The drug is continually tested for safety and effectiveness, just in case something was missed in the other trials.
