What are the main problems with divorce statistics?
They do not show the number of people who separate but not divorce, the number of people in empty-shell marriages and how many unstable or unhappy marriages there were before changes in law and society.

Describe trends in divorce rates
27,000 in 1961 to a peak of 180,000 in 1993 and then to 130,000 in 2012. This drop reflects less marriages in the first place. Britain has one of highest rates in the EU.

Introduced compulsory marriage counselling for a period of reflection and consideration. This was to try and stem the rising number but were scrapped because they were found to actually encourage divorce
