Definitions

'Demos' 'Kratis' - rule by the people. A type of political system that involves active participation of citizens, Lincoln 'of, by, for the people'; often through open discussion and debate - free flow of info. Gov. accountable.

Democracy

Government/regime/institution/individual holds mandate to govern/exercise power - usually bestowed through elections e.g. May 2015. However can be contested e.g. Tories 34% majority thus more pple don't want them and protests against their legitimacy

Legitimacy

Type/style of democracy where pple make important political decisions e.g. Constitutional - Scottish Referendum, moral - Irish Gay Marriage. May be consulted instead - public consultations e.g. Drivers Licence Fees July 2014.

Direct Democracy

Type/style of democracy where people elect/appoint representatives to make decisions for them e.g. UK. Includes pressure groups, political parties, MPs and Gov., legislature and election process. These bodies are accountable to the people.

Representative Democracy

The process through which a representative democracy occurs - political parties, free elections, MPs and government, the legislature. All elected/appointed to represent. Also the social representation of people in an institution.

Representation

Associations (loose/formal) who seek to influence decision makers - may put up candidates for election but not to get power. Further interests of sections of society and causes e.g. BBA, Green Peace, Liberty.

Pressure Group

A national/regional/local vote on a key political issue e.g. constitutional - Scotts Ref. Single question with Y/N answer considered binding. "Should Scotland be an independent country?".

Referendum

Type/Style of democracy where rights and liberties are respected through strong constitutional frameworks and the rule of law.

Liberal Democracy

Type of liberal democracy where parliament is the sovereign power and concentrated centrally.

Parliamentary Democracy

When many citizens take part in political activity e.g. minimal receiving info and voting or deep by becoming an MP also pressure groups and consultations.
