Louisiana Purchase - increase in new potential states which could either be slave or free. Northerners want free states to keep competition low. Southerners want slave states to keep the Congress from voting to outlaw slavery.

Abolition of Slave Trade - This angers the Southerners who start forcing slaves to procreate and start trading the offspring of their slaves between one another.

Missouri Compromise - Missouri has enough population to apply for representation in Congress as a slave state; to keep the balance of free and slave states represented in Congress, Maine joins as a free state.

Mexican Succession - Mexico was forced to give the US land after the Mexican-American War over Texas. This gave the US more territory to split into states

Compromise of 1850 - New states (gained after the Mexican-American War) could decide whether they are free or slave. Fugitive Slave Law is tightened which angers Northerners and abolitionists.

Bleeding Kansas and Creation of Republican political party -

Dred Scott Decision - Dred Scott was a slave taken from Missouri to Wisconsin by his owner and so argued that he was free. The court said he wasn't a citizen, and the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional (this angered abolitionists)

Lincoln's Election - Lincoln was highly unpopular in the South due to his party (Republican Party) being built on anti-slavery.

Secession of 1861 - South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, secede and form the Confederate States with a new President and a Constitution which promises that slavery will never be abolished.

Confederate Troops begin firing at Union troops at Fort Sumter.
