It was a religious excuse for war - good reason, good intentions and official leader. Mathilda of Tuscany helped Pope Urban to develop idea of 'penintential warfare' - fought was as penance to make up for sins.

The remission of sins. Pope Urban offered this as version 1 of indulgence.

What is the Gregorian Reform Movement?
Copying the life of Christ to get to heaven - it was popularised at this time to get more people to join the crusade. The crusade also offered the best chance to do this as they were reduced to a simple lifestyle.
