What was the confessing church at Finkenwalde?
was a breakaway christian church that rejected the german christian church, valued church community, promoted responsibility of others, focussed on the cost of discipleship and the suffering it entails

incorperated the ideology of nazism in to their beliefs leading to a split in protestant churches in 1934 between the German church and the confessing church

seen as the leader of christianity alongside jesus, some leaders of the church wore brown uniforms linking them to national socialism, promoted the Aryan cause (no jewish ministers, campaign to remove old testement from the bible which was jewish)

was ordained in 1931 with a group of "young reformers", he accused german christians of not being true to discipleship or their faith. he was apart of the conffessing church which rejected Nazi-rule over the church- Bonhoeffer openly spoke out

What happened to Bonhoeffer in 1935?
leaders of the confessing church asked bonhoeffer to lead and direct an illegal seminary (a place to train new pastors) this was closed by the gestapo in 1937

What is a seminary?
an experience in community and a place for the spiritually damaged, and a refuge for the persucuted, source of spiritual discipline and a sign of god in the community- this is what it is meant to live under the word of God

What is discipleship?
entails exclusive leadership of jesus and the will of god, placing it above the law or any human leadership,entails cutting yourself of from your previous existence, this is the only real faith and gods call to demand actions gives no time to think

What is single-minded obedience?
this is what Bonhoeffer called for, Just as Jesus called for peter to risk his life and walk on the sea, But reason, conscience and piety all stand in the way of obedience

What is suffering and sacrifice?
this is inherent to discipleship, anyone that follows Christ must pick up his cross and follow the path of suffering that Jesus walks, suffering is an essential part of human life

Did he speak out against Nazi-idealism?
he spoke out against Nazism at the university where he worked (he lost his job), oublic lectures (he was banned), illegal seminars- he argued that Hitler was anti-christ and was believed to have joined the plot to assasinate hitler in 1945

one must break the chritian teaching of obeying civil authority, he justifys civil disobiedience by focusing on obedience to god rather than duty to the state

gods love and mercy given freely to people,including the forgiveness of sins and the offer of eternal life-it is a freely given gift which comes from Gods desire to save all sinners

What is cheap grace?
it is "the deadly enemy of the church, we are fighting today for costly grace, cheap grace means grace sold on the market"-christians shouldnt be living lifes with no struggle but plenty of rewards just because Jesus suffered for our sins

What is costly grace?
"it is costly because it costs more than his life, it is grace because it gives a man the only true life"- we would gladly sacrifice everything for it, we must follow Jesus and change our lives- it is "the hidden treasure in the field"

what did Bonhoeffer believe the purpose of christian life was?
it is not to be "religious" but to have a relationship with God through living an existence for others, this led to him returning to Berlin 21 days after going to USA for safty

What did Bonhoeffer want to do?
He wanted to share in time of suffering with German people, he got involved in the resistance (passing information to allies,smugguling Jews to safty in switseland by pretending to be a german millitance intelligencer-leading to his arrest (gestapo)
