Stages of research/development
1, Drug is isolated from existing species or is synthesised in a lab. 2, Tested on animals to determine the LD50. 3, Tested on humans and some are given a placebo.

Therapeutic window... Wide + Narrow
Wide, means safer drug as higher dose required for lethality. Narrow, means dangerous, as low dose is required for lethality, easier to overdose.
Mild- intercepting pain at stimulus, prostaglandins. Strong- bond to receptor sites, preventing neurotransmission.

Strong analgesics
Heroin ester groups, non polar, allow for travel across blood brain barrier, OH groups in morphine don't.

Depressants
Low/Moderate dose: sedation, reduced anxiety, relaxation, sense of well being. High doses: sleep, coma, unconsciousness and death.

Alcohol
Breathalyser- acidified potassium dichromate, oxidises any alcohol in breath, dichromate ion changes to green if alcohol present. Chromatography- retention times for pure ethanol
