What are delocalised electrons?
Bonding electron that is no longer associated with any one particular atom
1 of 9
What is the structure of metals?
lattice of positively charged ions, that the metals ion are arranged in regular layers, one on top of another
2 of 9
How do the electrons of metals behave?
The outer electron from each metal atom can easily move throughout the giant structure. The outer electons form delocalised electrons. Strong electrostatic attraction between - elecrtons and + ions bond the metal together
3 of 9
How do you break up giant ionic lattice?
To break up the lattice the electostatic forces of attraction need to broken, this is why it has a high melting and boiling point
4 of 9
What happens when we seperate ions form the lattice?
The ionic solids melt and become a liquid, the ions are free to move anywhere in this liquid, therefore they can carry their electrical charge through the molten liquid
5 of 9
What happens when ionic compounds dissolve in water?
The lattic splits up by the water molecules, the ions are then free to move around in the solution they formed. The ions can now conduct electricity. The ions are able to move to an oppositley charged electrode dipped in the solution

About the Ionic solid
Ions are fixed in a lattice. They vibrate but cannot move around. it does conduct electricity
7 of 9
About Molten ionic compounds
High temperature provides enough energy to overcome the many strong forces between ions. Ions are free to move around within the molten compunds - it does conduct electricity
8 of 9
About Ionic Vompund in solution
Water molecules separate ions fron the lattice. Ions are free to move around within the solution - it does conduct electricity
