What happens to atoms when we bend and shape metals?
When we bend and shape metals the layers of atoms in the giant metallic structures slide over each other.

What are alloys?
Alloys are mixtures of metals or metals mixed with other elements and are harder than pure metals because the layers in the structure are distorted.
2 of 13
What can be done if a shape-memory alloy is deformed?
It can return to its original shape on heating.
3 of 13
What do the delocalised electrons in metals enable?
Delocalised electrons in metals enable metals to conduct heat and electricity well.
4 of 13
How are metal atoms arranged?
In layers.
5 of 13
What happens to the layers of metal atoms when a force is applied?
They can slide over each other and move into a new position without breaking apart, so the metal bends or stretches into a new shape.
6 of 13
What advantage does being able to bend and stretch into a new position have?
It means that metals are useful for making wires, rods and sheet materials.
7 of 13
What do the different sized atoms in an alloy do?
The different sized atoms in the mixture distort the layers in the metal structure and make it more difficult for them to slide over each other, this makes alloys harder than pure metals.
8 of 13
What are shape memory alloys?
Alloys that can be bent or deformed into a different shape, when they are heated they return to their original shape. They can be used in many ways, e.g. as dental braces.
9 of 13
Why are metals good conductors of electricity?
Metal structures have delocalised electrons. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity because the delocalised electrons move throughout the giant metallic lattice and can transfer energy quickly.
10 of 13
Why can metals be made into wires?
When stretched, the atoms slide into new positions without breaking apart.

Alloys can be more useful than pure metals, why is this?
They are harder than pure metals, they can be made/designed to have specific properties or special properties such as shape-memory alloys.
