What is the definition of an empirical formula?
The simplest whole-number ratio of atoms for each element in a compound. E.g. Ethene (C2H6) has the empirical formula of CH3
2 of 6
What is the definition of a molecular formula?
The actual number of atoms for each element in a compound.
3 of 6
What is the definition of a structural formula?
Shows the arrangement of the atoms carbon by carbon. e.g. Butan-1-ol can be written as CH3CH2CH2CH2OH (or as CH3(CH2)3OH)

What is the definition of a skeletal formula?
Shows the bonds of the carbon skeleton only. The vertexes of the lines represent one carbon atom. The hydrogen and carbon atoms aren't shown but functional groups can be.

What is the definition of a displayed formula?
Shows how the atoms in a compound are arranged. Shows bonds between them all.
