Chemistry

?
What do simple molecular substances consist of?
consist of molecules which are joined together by strong covalent bonds.
1 of 16
Can you name 3 properties of a molecule with weak bonds?
they have a low boiling point, low melting point and they do not conduct electricity.
2 of 16
Do covalently bonded substances consisting of simple molecules conduct electricity?
no they do not. This is because the molecules have no overall charge
3 of 16
How are ionic compounds different to regular covalent ones in terms of bonding?
Ionic compounds have high melting points and boiling points because a large amount of energy is required to break the many strong bonds.
4 of 16
How can you make an ionic compound conduct electricity?
you can melt or dissolve them in water. this is because the ions are free to move and carry the current.
5 of 16
How can you make a covalently bonded structure strong?
covalently bond them with giant structures,(macromolecules) then they will have a high boiling point, e.g diamond.
6 of 16
In diamond, how many covalent bonds are formed for each carbon atom?
4 so it is hard, used for tools, poor conductor.
7 of 16
In graphite how many covalent bonds per carbon atom?
3 covalent bonds, the layers can slide causing the graphite to be soft and slippery.
8 of 16
Can you name another thing that Carbon can form?
Form Fullrerenes which can be used for drug delivery into the body, in lubricants and in nanotubes for reinforcing materials e.g rackets.
9 of 16
How can metals conduct electricity?
They conduct electricity because they have delocalised electrons that are free to move around to carry a charge.
10 of 16
Can you name 3 properties of metals?
malleable = easily shaped, sonorous = makes a sound when hit, ductile = can be drawn out into different strands.
11 of 16
What do alloys consist of?
2 or more different metals.
12 of 16
How are alloys strong?
Because there are diferent sized atoms in the metals that distort the layers in the structure making it harder for them to slide over one another.
13 of 16
What are the two main types of polymers?
LDPE and HDPE.
14 of 16
What is the difference between thermo setting polymers and thermo softening polymers?
Thermo setting polymers consist of polymer chains witch cross links so they do not melt when heated thermo softening polymers consist of individual tangled polymer chains, not as strong.
15 of 16
What can nano science lead to?
new computers, highly selective sensors, cosmetics such as sun tan cream and deoderants.
