Because Edward was so young, who was ruling on his behalf?
Meant to be a regency council (Henry's will) made up of both Protestants and Conservatives, but they handed power to Edward's uncle, Edward Seymour (Earl of Hertford -> Duke of Somerset)

What were difficulties faced by Edward?
The country was divided over religion, Crown finances had suffered (France, Scotland), coinage had been debased (inflation), monastic lands had been sold off (Crown security suffered).

First victim of the factional rivalry?
Thomas Seymour, Somerset's brother, tried to plot w/the Earl of Southampton against Somerset and turn Edward VI against Somerset -> resulted in treason charges.

How did Somerset fall from power?
1549: Warwick + Southampton decided Somerset's control should be bought to an end, Somerset surrendered afteer they promised no treason charges would be bought against him.

What was the second coup?
Warwick directed a second coup at conservatives (who had supported the first coup) - Warwick promoted to Duke of Northumberland.

How did Northumberland operate an effective government?
Through a Privy Council - until Somerset attempted a countercoup to recover his old position. Then, Northumberland executed him and became less conciliar (acting exactly how Somerset did previously)

Why did Edward's ill health cause problems for Northumberland?
Henry VIII's will stated Mary should become Queen - she was Catholic (Northumberland was Protestant)

How did Northumberland try to solve the succession issue?
The Devyse: Attempt to declare Mary and Elizabeth illegitimate while LJG was made next in line.

Why did the Devyse fail?
Edward died in July 1553 before the Devyse was ratified by parliament, therefore it was patently illegal.

What was the main difference between Henry's FP outlook and Somerset's FP outlook?
Henry focused on France while Somerset's main priority was Scotland.

Relations with foreign powers? Somerset
Somerset invaded Scotland, won Battle of Pinkie in 1549 but plans failed when French managed to gain control of Princess Mary + forts = unaffordable. Led to threat of war w France.

Relations w FP? Northumberland
Made peace w/France and Scotland. Had to return Boulogne (for £133,333) which improved Crown finances overall.
