PHYSIOLOGICAL: Genetic Explanation
The closer you are to someone genetically who has schizophrenia, the more likely you are to have it yourself. GOTTESMAN & SHIELDS twin studies: MZ twins had higher concordance rate with 14%-60% compared to DZ twins with 7%-18%. However, not 100%.

PHYSIOLOGICAL: Dopamine
Dopamine is seen to be the caused of schizophrenia. Evidence: drug called PHENOTHIAZINES reduces dopamine, also symptoms of schizophrenia.

PSYCHOLOGICAL: Double Bind Communication
1950s & 1960s suggested that dysfunctional relationships within family caused schizophrenia. BERGER (1965) found that DBC common in those diagnosed as schizophrenic. Where 2 messages were given; parent says one thing then implies the other.

PSYCHOLOGICAL: Cognitive Explanation
Schizophrenia due to faulty thinking. MAHER (1974) theorized that schizophrenics make sense of events differently to non-schizophrenic. They make sense of their delusions which leads them to believing it. They are unable to rationalise accurately.
