Bass drum plays on beats 1 & 3, snare drums accents backbeats (beats 2 & 4). Frequent syncopation in vocals and bass. Cross-rhythms created through two-against-three rhythms

Instrumentation and Texture

Vocals accompanied by guitars, bass, synth, strings and drums. Guitars use drop d tuning. Drums and guitar play through most of song, synth and string drop out occasionally creating variation in texture. Texture thicker at end (in Coda).

Tonality and Harmony

In E minor, however tonality ambiguous e.g. intro focuses on D chord. Harmony unusual for rock song, standard 1,4,5 chord progressions not used. Instead, chromatic chords used and move in parallel motion. Some harmonies dissonant

Vocal part ranges over 2 octaves. Frequent ornamentation in melody line, with glissandos between notes.

Use of technology

Modulation on synth at start. Distortion and flanger on guitar. overdubbing on guitar. EQ in final verse removes lower frequencies from voice.
