Define TRANSPIRATION
Transpiration is the process where water is lost through the stomata.
1 of 12
What does a plant need to survive?
Sunlight, Water and carbon dioxide.
2 of 12
What are stomata?
They close to stop water loss. Carbon dioxide passes into the stomata and water vapour passes out.
3 of 12
What are the labels for the different layers of a leaf?
Upper/Lower Epidermis, Palisade, Spongey, Guard Cells, Stomata, Vein, Xylem, Phloem, Waxy cuticle.
4 of 12
What are the functions of the xylem and phloem?
The xylem carries water and the phloem carries sugar.
5 of 12
How are root hair cells adapted to do their job?
Large surface area so absorption of water is at a maximum.
6 of 12
What environmental factors effect transpiration and HOW?
Temperature- high temperatures Increase transpiration- the more air movement, the faster the rate of transpiration. Humidity- Increased humidity, decreases transpiration. Light Intensity- Stomata are open in light therefore increasing transpiration
7 of 12
Not enough nitrogen, potassium and phosphate causes the plant to what?
Nitrogen- poor growth, potassium- yellow leaves, phosphate- poor root groth.
8 of 12
What do farmers use to prevent mineral deficiency?
KPN fertilisers.
9 of 12
Describe a red blood cell?
Biconcave shape- increased surface area for O2. A red blood cell carried o2 around the body. It contains Haemoglobin which absorbs the o2 and makes the blood look red and it also has no nucleas.
10 of 12
White blood cell?
Two types- Phagocyte(engulfs bacteria) and the others produce antibodies. They are an important part of our immune system and can change shape to squeeze through very small gaps in the capillar wall. They have a nucleas, a cell membrane and lysosome.
11 of 12
What are the other two components that make up the blood(except for the red and white blood cells)
Platelets- Help to clot blood at the site of a wound. Plasma- clear liquid that transports glucose, co2 and waste products around the body. P
