Whats the difference between being fit and healthy?
Being fit is the ability to take part in physical activity, being healthy is being free from disease.
1 of 23
Explain one way of which smoking can increase blood pressure
Carbon monoxide combines with haemoglobin and reduces the amount of oxgen red blood cells can carry meaning blood pressure has to increase.
2 of 23
How do narrow arteries increase risk of heart attack?
They restrict blood flow and if a thrombosis occurs in an already narrow artery blood may be cut of completely and this could lead to a heart attack.
3 of 23
Explain what causes the condition 'kwashiorkor' and why is it more common in developing countries.
A lack of protein. More common in developing countries because of overpopulation and a lack of money.
4 of 23
What is a parasite?
An organism which lives off another organism- a host. Often causing harm to it.
5 of 23
How do antibodies destroy pathogens.
They are created to match specific antigens on the surface of pathogens in order to lock onto these invading cells and kill them.
6 of 23
What is the difference between Malignant and Benign tumours?
Benign is less dangerous as cells stay in one place and only grow until they no longer have room, on the other hand malignant tumours are more fatal as cells can grow and spread to other sites.
7 of 23
Explain how immunisation stops you getting infections.
Dead or innactive pathogens are injected in to the body where white blood cells react and create antibodies to destroy these pathogens, some white blood cells stay around in the blood and are called memory cells incase these pathogens infect again.
8 of 23
What is a double blind trial?
Where both the scientist and the patient dont know whether they've recieved the placebo or the actual drug.
9 of 23
What affects do stimulant drugs have on the brain?
Increase brain activity.
10 of 23
Give two examples of stimulants.
Caffeine, nicotine
11 of 23
Descibe how too much alcohol can damage the liver.
Alcohol contains toxic substances which when are broken down by enzymes kill liver cells and prevent the liver from doing its job of cleaning the blood. Cirrhosis.
12 of 23
List class C drugs
Anabolic steriods and tranquilisers
13 of 23
List some class A drugs
Heroin, ecstacy, cocaine and LSD
14 of 23
List class B drugs
Cannabis and speed.
15 of 23
Explain what depressant drugs do to the synapse.
They bind with neurone molecules and block electrical impulses.
16 of 23
What do depressants do to the body?
Slow down responses by the nervous system and brain activity decreases. Making you tired, blurring vision, slurring speach and giving you poor co-ordiation.
17 of 23
List some depressants.
Alcohol, solvents and tamazepam.
18 of 23
Name some painkillers
Asprin and paracetomol.
19 of 23
What do hallucinogens do?
Distort whats seen and heard by changing pathways that the brain sends messages along.
20 of 23
Explain why smoking can give you a smokers cough.
Smoking damages the cilia on the epathelial tissue lining the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles meaning mucus is encourages and excess mucus sticks to air passages.
21 of 23
Explain how smoking causes cancer.
Tar from cigarete smoke collects in the lungs and is full of toxic chemicals including carcinogens which can cause cancer. Carcinogens mutate in DNA and if th8is happens cell division may go out of control and malignant tumours could be formed.
22 of 23
Describe how body temperature is reduced when you're too hot.
Sweating, hairs lie flat and vasodilation.
