A characteristic which increases an organism's chance of survival in its environment. 1 of 30 What is an extremophile? An organism that lives in extreme conditions, such as places with high salt or heat. 2 of 30 What is competition? Competition is a contest between organisms for territory, food, water, or a mate. 3 of 30 What are producers? Green plants that make food by photosynthesis. 4 of 30 What is a primary consumer? An animal that is a herbivore. 5 of 30 What are decomposers? Decomposers feed on dead and decaying organisms, and on the undigested parts of plant and animal matter in faeces. 6 of 30 What are scavengers? Animals that feed on dead animals. Examples include crows and vultures. 7 of 30 Name the two main decomposers. Bacteria and fungi. 8 of 30 What is decay? The breakdown of organic material by microorganisms. 9 of 30 What conditions are needed for decay to occur? Warmth, oxygen, moisture. Warmth for enzymes to work at their optimum rate, oxygen for aerobic respiration, and moisture for reproduction. 10 of 30 What is a population? A number of the same type of organism. 11 of 30 What is an ecosystem? The habitat and the living things that are found in it. 12 of 30 Define ecology. The study of the interaction between living organisms and their environment. 13 of 30 What is a biotic factor? Something that influences a living organism and is caused by other living organisms e.g. competition. 14 of 30 What is a lichen? A lichen is a small organism that consists of both a fungus and an alga. 15 of 30 Name the two types of variation. Genetic and environmental. 16 of 30 Name the two types of cells. Somatic cells and gametes. 17 of 30 What are somatic cells? Normal body cells. 18 of 30 The nucleus contains genetic material. How many pairs of chromosomes does it have? 23 pairs. 19 of 30 What is coiled up to form a chromosome? DNA 20 of 30 What are genes made up from? DNA 21 of 30 What are vertebrates? Animals with a backbone. 22 of 30 What are invertebrates? Animals without a backbone. 23 of 30 What is the function of the cell membrane? The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. 24 of 30 What is the function of the nucleus? The nucleus controls the activities of the cell and contains chromosomes (made of DNA). 25 of 30 What is the function of cytoplasm? Cytoplasm is where chemical reactions take place. 26 of 30 What is the function of the cell wall? The cell wall protects and strengthens the cell. 27 of 30 What is the function of the vacuole? The vacuole is where sap is stored. 28 of 30 What is the function of mitochondria? Mitochondria release energy during respiration. 29 of 30 What is the function of ribosomes? Ribosomes are where proteins are made through the process of protein synthesis. 30 of 30
