What is the social learning theory of aggression?
The Social Learning Theory proposes that aggression is learnt through imitation and is more likely to be repeated if: • Behaviour is reinforced (rewarded) • A role model is the one behaving in this manner

Learning the consequences of aggressive behaviour by watching others

What did Bandura believe regarding aggression?
Bandura believed that vicarious learning is the most probable cause for aggression. Bandura went on to explain that the likelihood of people going on to produce aggressive behaviour themselves is determined by mental representation and self-efficacy.

What is mental representation (SLT)?
The child must form a mental representation of the behaviour within their social environment and the possible rewards and costs. It will be put into use as long as the expectation of reward is greater than the expectation of punishment.

Self-efficacy expectancies
In addition to forming expectancies on the outcomes of their aggression, children also develop confidence in their ability to carry out the necessary aggressive actions.
