Walking away
poem is about a father who is learning to let his son go by coming to an understanding that this is a natural process, every child has to experience independence and every parent has to let go. the poem explores the sacrificial nature of parental love
form, structure and language
the poem has a first person narrator which emphasises the poet is talking about personal experiences. the use of enjambment and ceasural pauses contribute to the rythym of the poem which sounds like natural speech. poem has a consistent ABACA rhyme scheme which reflects the steadiness of the parents love and shows it is eternal.
written in quintets, 5 lines per stanza, controlled stanzas suggest how the father wants to take control but he needs to let his son go.
in the first two stanzas the narrator talks about the memory, in the final two stanzas he reflects on the memory and it still pains him. the final two lines of the poem act as a conclusion, the narrator understands that he must let his son go so he can develop from it.
