A model which helps understand how to intervene and prevent addictive behaviour

Azjen (1989)

A person's decision to engage in addictive behaviour is predicted by their intention to engage in the behaviour

Intention is influenced by the interaction between:

  1. Attitude to the behaviour
  2. Social norms
  3. Perceived behavioural control

Attitude to the behaviour:

  • Consideration of whether the consequences of the behaviour are positive or negative

Social Norms:

  • What significant others think about the behaviour and are actually doing
  • Legal

Perceived behavioural control:

  • Whether a person believes they can carry out a behaviour
  • Influences: intent, behaviour
