Operation Typhoon (September 1941)

• This was the German attack on Moscow
• Under threat of invasion, the Russian people panicked and rioting/looting broke out in the city
• Law and order broke down, government buildings were deserted and it was rumoured that Stalin was already in German hands
• By December, General Zhukov had launched the first Russian counter-attack, which successfully pushed the German army back to about 200km from the centre of Moscow
• At the same time, German troops encircled Leningrad, signalling the start of the seige of Leningrad
