  • Aims have changed from dynastic and limited conflict to ambitious aims e.g making of new states and the wish to impose one's ideology on others
  •  18th Century: The Revolutionary War campaigns differed from 18th Cent. wars due to the spread of new revolutionary ideas, which accompanied the expansion of French power and influence
  • 19th Century: mid-century wars had nationalist aims, created a new Italy and Germany, changing the balance of power in Europe. ACW was motivated by desires to end slavery and the unity of the US union, while the South fough for the rights of US states
  • 20th Century (WWI): National survival was at stake. Germany feared it was encircled by hostilepowers France, Britain and Russia. Britain feared national security was being threatened by militarism, Germany trade rivalry and a large German fleet.
