- 1950 New Marraige Law, women could hold property and seek divorce
- By 1958-1965 amount of child marraiges dropped to 2.4%
- 0.8% of marraiges arranged by parents by 1966-76
- Enforcing the law was a problem, 1950 report stated cadres were conservative and didnt want to liberate women
- Riots broke out as men tried to forceably reclaim their wives
- Party kindergartens in communes freed women to work in labour alongside men
- Propaganda campaign held up working women as 'iron women'
- However in reality they couldnt produce as much as men so only got 50% the food men goot
