The Changing Status Of Women
- New Marraige Law 1950, meant women could easily divorce men
- By 1958-1965 only 2.4% of marraiges involved women under 17
- By 1966-1976 only 0.8% of marraiges were organised by parents
- Armed mobs of peasants tried to forcefully take their wives back
- Local cadres often refused to enforce the law
- Women now allowed to work alongside the men in communes
- Kindergartens in communes meant women could work far more
