Uncle Peter is an absent character (a RAF pilot supposedly flying bombing missions over Germany) and a present character (the man in the Barns)
Uncle Peter is idealised and idolised
- Stephen paints a picture of him returning to the Close, surrounded by adoring children wanting to touch his insignia. This is like a war hero in a typical propaganda poster.
- Peter's iconic status reflects upon Auntie Dee who has a 'saint-like' glow.
