Spies - Character of Uncle Peter

Uncle Peter is an absent character (a RAF pilot supposedly flying bombing missions over Germany) and a present character (the man in the Barns)

Uncle Peter is idealised and idolised

  • Stephen paints a picture of him returning to the Close, surrounded by adoring children wanting to touch his insignia. This is like a war hero in a typical propaganda poster. 
  • Peter's iconic status reflects upon Auntie Dee who has a 'saint-like' glow.
  • His book shelves contain old adventure stories which Keith is sometimes allowed to borrow. This suggests that he has enjoyed a romantic notion of being an action hero.
