Secondary Storage
Magnetic Hard Disks:
- Form of secondary storage device.
- Consist of multiple platters or disks that are coated in a magentic material.
- 1 minute rotates 7200 times.
- Written in bits onto the surface as a series of changes in direction of magnetisation.
- Changes are detected and that's how tha data is read back.
- Hard disk can hold anything between 200GB and 1 TB of data.
- Advantages:
- Large amounts of data can be stored.
- Work is not lost when you turn off the computer.
- Relatively cheap per MB - compared to other storage devices.
- Disadvantages:
- Relatively slow compared to ROM AND RAM.
- If it crashes it stops the whole computer from working.
