Secondary Storage

Magnetic Hard Disks:

  • Form of secondary storage device.
  • Consist of multiple platters or disks that are coated in a magentic material.
  • 1 minute rotates 7200 times.
  • Written in bits onto the surface as a series of changes in direction of magnetisation.
  • Changes are detected and that's how tha data is read back.
  • Hard disk can hold anything between 200GB and 1 TB of data.
  • Advantages:
    • Large amounts of data can be stored.
    • Work is not lost when you turn off the computer.
    • Relatively cheap per MB - compared to other storage devices.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Relatively slow compared to ROM AND RAM.
    • If it crashes it stops the whole computer from working.
