FUNCTIONALISM

DURKHEIM identifies two main functions of education:

• Social solidarity- transmitting societys culture between generations.
• Specialist skills- To play their part in the social division of labour.

PARSONS: 

• Schools are meriotocratic- equal chance for everybody.
• Ed is an agent of socialisation, a bridge between the family and wider society.

DAVIS + MOORE: Role allocation, schools match a pupil to the job they are best suited to.
