- The area is declining due to the suffering effects of deindustrialisation
- The city is located in Michigan and is surrounded by the rust belt, an area of industrial decline
- It use to be famous for it's steel and car production (motor city) but fell into decline following automation, the global shift and increased free trade
- Population fell from 1.5 million in 1970 to 680,000 in 2015 ( over 50%)
- Average household income is $25,000 in 2015 which is half the national average
- The poverty rate in 38% and is so bad to the point where they can't afford basic items like food
- The lie expectancy is 69 years which is 8 years below national average
- Less than 30% of students graduate and with the students that do graduate they move to the city causing brain drain…
