Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime

Presidential Reconstruction
-
Under President Andrew Johnson after Lincoln’s assassination

Wanted to restore the Union in as little time as possible

He returned confiscated property to white southerners, issued hundreds of pardons to former Confederate officers, and undermined the Freedmen’s Bureau

He also appointed governors to supervise the drafting of new state constitutions and agreed to readmit the former seceded states once they had ratified the 13th Amendment

First Reconstruction Act - Divided the formerly seceded states into 5 military districts, each governed by a Union general. Troops were dispatched to keep the peace and to protect former slaves

Second Reconstruction Act - Union troops were placed in charge of voter registration

Third Reconstruction Act - Gave supreme power to the 5 Union generals overseeing the Reconstruction in the 5 districts in the South
