Before birth:
- Diploid germinal epithelium cells of the ovary divide by mitosis to form diploid oogonia and more germinal epithelium cells.
- These oogonia divide many times by mitosis and enlarge to form diploid primary oocytes, and more oogonia.
- The primary oocytes begin meiosis I but stop at prophase I.
- At the same time, germinal epithelium cells divide to form primary follicles, which surround the primary oocytes.
