Rejects the link between social structure and power. He suggests that power is an inescapable part of everyday life. In particular, power plays a major role in the construction of identity
There is a significant relationship between power, knowledge, and language. He argued that there exist bodies of knowledeg and language which he terms 'discourse'.
In the 18th century, there was a move away fron coercive forms of power associated with physical punishment (e.g. execution) he calls this 'disciplinary power'
