What was life like for them living under Mao?
- They were not allowed to publicly criticise any of the CCP's policies
- Had to be careful on what to say, even with people they trusted (e.g. family)
- The cult of personality surrounding Mao was prominent, as civilians were not allowed to have their own individual identities or live differently from others
What did they do for jobs?
- No free market, needed coupons for neccesities (traded them in for meat, rice etc)
- Jobs were allocated by the CCP, including youths. Everyone had fixed salaries (there was no free market)
- Everything needed to be worked for and shared (food, materials etc.)
Any particular memories or stories that they can think of?
- Great-grandfather was a capitalist, went to prison since CCP had accused him of working with the KMT. Had bad relations with the party members overall
